Parents often wonder when their child should first visit an orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation around age seven. At this age, children usually have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth, allowing an orthodontist to evaluate how the jaws and smile are developing.
An early evaluation does not always mean treatment will begin right away. In many cases, the goal is simply to monitor growth and determine the best time to begin care, if treatment becomes necessary.
What Can an Early Evaluation Identify?
An orthodontic evaluation may help identify concerns such as:
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- Crossbites
- Overbites or underbites
- Jaw growth concerns
- Habits such as prolonged thumb sucking
- Permanent teeth that may not be erupting properly
Recognizing these concerns early allows the orthodontist to create a thoughtful plan and monitor changes as the child grows.
Does Every Child Need Early Treatment?
No. Many children will not need treatment at age seven.
Some children may benefit from early orthodontic treatment when a developing issue could become more difficult to address later. Others may simply return for periodic growth checks until the timing is right for braces, clear aligners, or another treatment option.
