What Makes Self-Ligating Braces Different
The key difference comes down to how the archwire is held in place. Traditional braces use elastic ties that wrap around each bracket to secure the wire. Those ties create friction, wear out, and need to be replaced at regular intervals, which is a primary reason conventional braces require frequent adjustment appointments.
Self-ligating brackets replace elastic ties with a built-in sliding clip or door mechanism. The wire sits inside the bracket and is free to move as teeth shift, rather than being held rigidly in place. This allows for a lighter, more continuous force on the teeth throughout treatment.
Because the brackets do not rely on elastic ties, there is far less friction in the system. Teeth tend to move more freely along the wire, which can reduce the number of times the wire needs to be changed or adjusted. For patients, that translates directly into fewer trips to the office over the course of treatment.
